FORGETTING SINS OF THE PAST

FORGETTING SINS OF THE PAST

I Peter 4:8 - Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins

II Peter 1:5-9 - For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

Isaiah 54:4 - “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth…”

Isaiah 43:18-19 - 18 "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

Philippians 3:13* - Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

Hebrews 12:1 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

A SELFISH MAN'S VERSION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER

A SELFISH MAN'S VERSION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER

While our lips utter the Lord’s Prayer, our hearts often say another.
It goes something like this:

My servant, Who art in heaven,
Hollow is Thy name.
My own kingdom come; my own will be done,
On earth, and later in heaven.
Give me this day--gimme, gimme, gimme.
And forgive me my trespasses,
But don’t expect me to forgive others.
Bail me out when I give in to temptation,
And deliver me from the consequences of sin,
For in my kingdom I will wield power,
And expect glory forever.  A man.

FOOLISH AND STUPID ARGUMENTS

FOOLISH AND STUPID ARGUMENTS

There is an old saying that most of you have heard: "Never discuss religion or politics." It's Presidential campaign time again and facebook is set on fire with arguments. The Bible is a good guide for how to approach presenting your views to another person or persons. These are scripture verses but the same principle applies today in other venues.

"How painful are honest words! But what do your arguments prove?" Job 6:25

Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? Job 15:3
7 "Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. 8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning." Proverbs 9:7-9

13 "To answer before listening—that is folly and shame." Proverbs 18:13

It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. Proverbs 20:3

"Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death is one who deceives their neighborand says, “I was only joking!” Proverbs 26:18-19

"No one calls for justice; no one pleads a case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments, they utter lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil." Isaiah 59:4

"Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?" I Corinthians 3:1-3

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. I Corinthians 3:18-23

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." II Corinthians 10:5

"I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments." Colossians 2:4

"Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels." II Timothy 2:23

"But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." Titus 3:9 (The law being mainly the first 5 books of the Old Testament.)

"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill (or try to kill the President). You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures (in this case your choice causes)..."James 4:1-3

"But I desire to speak to the Almighty and to argue my case with God." Job 13:3 We just know God is on our side. He may not want the best candidate to win simply to humble the nation and show the nation that we need God to rule as He has in former centuries.

"Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?" Job 15:3

"A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel." Proverbs 15:18

"Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out." Proverbs 17:14

"Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;..." Proverbs 17:19

"An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels." Proverbs 18:1

"It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel." Proverbs 20:3

"Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended." Proverbs 22:10

"Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife." Proverbs 25:24

"Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. 6 Sending a message by the hands of a fool is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison." Proverbs 26:4-6

17 "Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own." Proverbs 26:17

"Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down." Proverbs 26:20

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind ...
Romans 14:1-13 ESV

"You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?..." I Corinthians 3:3

"Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, ..." I Timothy 3:1-2 This verse is talking about elders in the church but it also applies to those in authority.

"These are the things you are to teach and insist on. If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain." I Timothy 6:1-5

...guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. I Timothy 6:20-21

Regarding false teachers: "Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen." II Timothy 2:14

"And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." II Timothy 2:24

"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?" James 4:1

What do you desire to happen in the election? Do you want to win the argument for the sake of winning or personal victory? "You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God." James 4:2

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND ANIMALS

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND ANIMALS

Genesis 9:2 - "The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. (God speaking to Noah)

2 Kings 17:25 "When they first lived there, they did not worship the Lord; so he sent lions among them and they killed some of the people." God is in ultimate control of the creatures.

Psalm 34:10 "The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing." "Lions" refers to men in this case, I believe.

Psalm 104:21 "The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God.

Psalm 145:16 KJV - "Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing"

Ps. 145:21 NIV - "My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever."

Psalm 104:27 - "All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time."

Psalm 136:25 - "He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever."

Psalm 145:21 - "My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever."

Proverbs 28:1 - "The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion."

Ecclesiastes 9:4 "Anyone who is among the living has hope—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!"

Ecclesiastes 10:20 - "Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird in the sky may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say."

Isaiah 11:6-7 "The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox."

Isaiah 34:14  "Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also lie down and find for themselves places of rest."

Isaiah 35:9 "No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there,"

Isaiah 65:25 - "The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah 50:39 - “So desert creatures and hyenas will live there, and there the owl will dwell. It will never again be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation."

Ezekiel 38:20 - "The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence.

Daniel 6:22 - " My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight." Daniel was in a lion's den with hungry lions.

Amos 5:19 - "It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him." This sounds like my life.

Hosea 2:18 - "In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety." God has big plans for us and the creatures.

2 Timothy 4:17 - "But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth." The lion's mouth was greatly feared.

2 Peter 2:12 - "But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish."

A DEMON CALLED PORN

A DEMON CALLED PORN

I am a demon called Porn.
Among powers and principalities I rank high.
A host of fallen angels serve me;
We answer to the father of lies.

Few know that I am addictive;
I’ve hidden my secret well.
I’ll torture mankind on earth,
Then finish the job in hell.

I display my images across the screens,
Of movies, videos and tv.
On the pages of books and magazines,
To be viewed in secrecy.

I prey on young boys; they’re a delicacy to me--
Young men for whom God has a plan.
I’ll lure each with shock, seduce him with pleasure,
Suck his life, and leave the shell of a man.

I sit on a throne, crowned in great splendor,
And with spiritually dead bones pick my teeth.
But when knees hit the floor, my power is no more.
Thanks to Christ, whose crown was a wreath.

AWAKENED BY ANGELS

AWAKENED BY ANGELS

It was my first day at St. Louis Christian College. I was a student and a girls' Dorm Mom while there. There were no scheduled classes, but I had to talk to a counselor, revise my study load, purchase books, etc. I had thought about setting my alarm the night before but didn't since I wasn't on a set schedule. Amazingly, at the very time I would have set the alarm, angels woke me up. Yes, it's true. You see, I have these large, 3-dimensional Siamese twin angels that were hanging on the wall above my bed. Promptly at 7:05 am they fell on my head and woke me up. Not at 3:00 in the morning, or at 5:00 a.m., or even later at noon. No, it was 7:05 a.m.

If they were made of ceramic, I would now have a big scar across the top of my head. The emergency room report would read, "Deep laceration of the upper cranium as a result of a blow to the head said to have been caused by angels." In laymen's language, it would read, "She was knocked up the side of the head by angels."

If the angels were made of wrought iron, I would be dead right now. The newspaper headline would read, "College student killed by angels as she slept." As it was, the angels were only paper mache and no harm was done. In fact, the humor of it took a lot of stress off my first day jitters.

After it happened  I began to wonder if God was trying to send me a message. I silently asked, "Is that you, God? Are you trying to tell me something? I'm listening." Nothing. So I got ready and went over to the college building, still pondering my religious experience, giggling within at the type of angels God sent forth to minister to me. I had to be careful not to laugh out loud because it would leave a bad first impression on my fellow students and others who might witness my seemingly unexplainable outbursts of laughter.

I was feeling pretty good about my importance to the Lord. After all, could any of the other students say they were awakened by angels on the first day of college? No, just me. I was really proud. Then it hit me. I don't mean the angels this time. The thought hit me: they were
fallen angels. Uh oh! My whole perspective changed. There could be some real meaning behind this. After all, God is very symbolic. Was I being punished by God? Was there a sin in my life I needed to give up? Or maybe this was the equivalent to a slap in the face from Satan. Maybe he is angry at me for going to a Christian college. He thought he had beaten me down with life's problems. If so, 𝅘𝅥𝅮𝅘𝅥𝅮 I'm ba-a-ack 𝅘𝅥𝅮𝅘𝅥𝅮!

Eventually I began to mutter constantly to myself -- God or Satan? -- attended to by angels? -- punished by God -- persecuted by the devil? I looked for other clues the rest of the day, but nothing, good, bad, or eventful happened that day except I fell on some icy, concrete stairs. That's bad, especially if Satan caused me to slip, but I wasn't hurt. That's good. Maybe an angel cushioned my fall. Discerning these matters proved too much for me. I was driving myself crazy trying to figure it all out.

If I have learned any lessons from my awakening, if there was any revelation (certainly not a new one), it is to be careful how I discern things. What I think is from God may be from Satan. What I think is from Satan could be from God. Or it could all be sheer coincidence. From now on any angels on high at my house will hang high above the computer table and not high above my bed. I'm not taking any chances.

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matt. 10:22),

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved...(Mark 16:16),

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved (John 10:9),

...everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21),

there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12)

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9)

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13),

...hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord (I Corinthians 5:5). Note that the point isn't that Satan is allotted his punishment but the intent of punishment is that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (I Corinthians 15:2)

it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:5)

...women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. (I Timothy 2:15)

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good. (Titus 3:1)

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5),

And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” (I Peter 4:18)

What are the 5 steps to salvation?

Hear the Gospel. ( Romans 10:17, John 8:32)
Believe the Gospel (Hebrews 11:6, John 20:31)
Repent of past sins (Luke 13:3, Acts 17:30)
Confess faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:10, Matthew 10:32)
Be Baptized (Galatians 3:27, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38)
Be faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10)

(The above verses were taken from the internet and were compiled by Gateway Baptist Church.)

MOM'S QUIPS & QUOTES

MOM’S QUIPS, QUOTES & WISECRACKS

(I didn’t want to forget her little sayings, so I wrote them down.)

I’m gonna kill two stones with one bird.

Pake your tick. (Take your pick.)

You zig and I’ll zag. (when about to bump into someone)

Would you like to say a few words before you speak?

Every silver lining has a cloud.

Why do things the easy way when you can do them the hard way?

Pull up a chair and sit in the floor.

If you worked as hard as you griped, you’d be done.

Anybody that believes that, stand on your head.

Aaaaah, shaddup.

“I’ll swan” “By cracky.” "For heaven's sake!"

There’s not enough room in here to change your mind.

There’s not enough room in here to cuss a cat without getting hair in your mouth.

When told to watch out for a puddle she said, “That’s alright. I can swim."

When someone accidentally stepped on Mom's foot and apologized, she would say “That’s alright. I walk on them myself.”

When Mom couldn’t get her words out right, she would say, “My tangue is tungled.

Dad was feverishly getting ready for a fishing trip one day. My brother, Casey, said, “Dad those fish will still be there when you get there" to which Mom responded in a dry voice, “Yow, and they’ll still be there when you get back. (They were fishing competitors.)

When a bug splattered on the windshield, Mom said, “It took guts to do that. Then she said, “I bet he doesn’t have the guts to do it again.

Mom improvised the Hickory Dickory Dock rhyme to go:
"Hickory, dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock. The clock struck one and the other two got away with only minor injuries."

Another rhyme she butchered went:
"T'was the night before Christmas and all through the house; t'was the smell of fresh meat; they were cooking a mouse."

I need some chips to wash my Coke down with.

Come in and make yourself useless (in her sweet voice and only to people who knew her humor).

Oh, are you in my way? (said in the same tone of voice as if she were saying it the right way) The other person's response is always the same as if she had said it the right way because that's what they expected, but then they catch on and start stuttering because they don't know what to say).

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. (In other words, speak softly and lovingly.)

No one ever flies so high that they don't have to come down to earth to poop.

Mom and her 8 siblings used to sing this little church chorus that they improvised:
"In the sweet by and by,
Gimme some pie.
We shall meet on that beautiful shore,
Gimme some more."

He/she has a big "I", little "u" attitude.

You'd better be careful crossing the street or you'll just be a greasy spot on the road.

Mom's diet: Eat anything you want; just don't swallow.

When someone would get excited over a sale price, Mom would say "Well, you can't beat that with a stick."

Varicose veins became "very close veins."

Simmer down!

We're going to be up poo poo creek without a paddle.

Come in and make yourself homeless.

That's so ugly it's cute.

Butterscotch pie was Scutterbotch pie.

I'm gonna live 'til I die. (In other words, I'm not going to worry about eggs being bad for you, bacon either.)

For crying out loud!

Flied lice for fried rice.

MY SISTER, MARILYN, AN AMAZING OVERCOMER

My sister, Marilyn, an Amazing Overcomer

My sister, Marilyn Cockrum, is a twin. Her twin, Carolyn Petersen, is still living but in a different location: heaven. They are/were identical. (Carolyn has a new body and a new name.) They were born premature and weren’t expected to live but they did. The earliest memory I have of them was them jumping off of our tall piano onto a wooden rocking chair. They were as cute as could be but were hyper and needed constant watching when they were little. Even so, they got through their childhood without any broken bones or major injuries. Carolyn did have encephalitis one summer and spent time in Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. She was about 8 or 9.

They were femme fatales in high school but they were still fun-loving daredevils. They loved riding motorcycles. Both of them were witty and they were good singers. Carolyn sang lead and Marilyn sang harmony. Mom sang too and played the piano by ear. The twins enjoyed each other’s company, never wanting to be too far apart.

After high school life took them down harder roads. Marilyn married and her husband, Larry, had to go to Vietnam. Carolyn’s husband escaped the draft. When Larry returned, he had a difficult time adjusting to a normal life. He slept outside with his rifle by his side for a while. He turned a room into a Vietnam and army museum. He had been around agent orange in Nam so when Marilyn got pregnant, she lost the baby. It was perfectly formed but teeny tiny. She went on to lose three more babies and then she lost Larry. The babies included twins and she lost them a month apart. As a side note, she and Carolyn were twins, our dad had a twin, I married a twin, and Dad’s twin’s son had twins. Marilyn’s losses continued because she lost a good job, a nice house, and her health. She later was unable to drive so she lost her car. A few years later she (we) lost a brother, our parents, a nephew, and then her twin. We have since lost another sister, Linda Overturf. Marilyn has had more diseases than I can name and yet she conquered most of them against all odds. She is now 72 and still going, though on an electric scooter.

Although Marilyn has suffered so many losses in life, she will cheer you up if you go visit her. She has had her bouts of depression and still does, of course, but she has still got a quick wit. She’s at Heritage Woods now and is President of the residents’ committee. That’s not the correct title but I’m adlibbing it. I’ve always wanted to tell her story because it is such a testimony as to what an overcomer she is and how she never lost her faith and never had a fear of proclaiming the name of Christ. She deserves a pat on the back or a hug here on earth and heaven in the afterlife where she will have a big family and reunite with her twin.

  40. Show the kids respect.
