THE POWER OF WORDS

THE POWER OF WORDS

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Do you really believe that? It is contrary to scripture and mental health research. There is great power in words. They are greater than brute force with the exception that they can’t directly take another person’s life, though they can order it done. One can be a paraplegic and still have great power with the words he or she speaks.

A king of Heracleopolis said to his son, who was his successor: Be skillful in speech, that you may be strong…Words are braver than all fighting.” He said this in 2040 B.C.

A flattering tongue:
Psalm 5:9 - For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

Psalm 12:3 - May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue—

Psalm 36:2 - In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.

Psalm 78:35-37 - They remembered that God was their Rock,
that God Most High was their Redeemer.
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.

Proverbs 18:13 - To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.

Proverbs 26:28 - A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

Proverbs 28:23 - Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.

Proverbs 29:5 - Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet.

Romans 16:18 - For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

1 Thessalonians 2:5 - You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness.

Jude 1:16 - These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

A proud or boastful tongue:
Psalm 73:9 - Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.

A lying tongue:
Psalm 5:9 - Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;
with their tongues they tell lies.

Ps. 109:2 - for people who are wicked and deceitful
have opened their mouths against me;
they have spoken against me with lying tongues.

Psalm 120:3 - What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

Prov. 6:16-19: There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
  • 17 haughty eyes,
  • a lying tongue,
  • hands that shed innocent blood,
  • 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
  • feet that are quick to rush into evil,
  • 19 a false witness who pours out lies
  • and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Proverbs 17:4 - A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

Proverbs 21:6 - The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.

A deceitful tongue:
Psalm 120:2 - Save me, Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.

A perverted tongue:
Prov 10:31-32  - The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

Prov. 15:4  - A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

A soothing tongue:
Prov. 15:1 - A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright:

Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

A healing tongue:

Prov. 12:18 – There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

An angry tongue:
Psalm 37:8 - Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

Eph. 4:26 - “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

Prov. 15:1 - A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Proverbs 25:23 - The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

A sharp tongue:
Psalm 140:3 - They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

 A destructive, untamable tongue:
James 3:2-13 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

James 4:11 (NIV) - Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.

James 1:26 (NIV) - Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

Prov 17:4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

Proverbs 21:23 - Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

A mischievous & wicked tongue
Psalm 10:7 - His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

Proverbs 17:4 - A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

Psalm 34:13  - Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Psalm 50:19 - Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

Exodus 20:7 - “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

A soft tongue
Proverbs 25:15 - By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

A backbiting tongue
Proverbs 25:23 - The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

A slanderous tongue
I Peter 2:1 - Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

2 Cor. 12:20 - “For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.” Did you notice how most, if not all, of these vices spawn from words.

James 4:11-12 - Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor?

A wise tongue
Proverbs 12:18 - There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

Proverbs 15:2 - The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright:

Isaiah 50:4 (NIV) - The Lord God hath given me the tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.

Gossiping:
That’s another lesson in and of itself. I tore a clip out of a newsletter that goes like this:

Mrs. Brown: “She told me that you told her the secret that I told you not to tell her!”
Mrs. Blue: “That mean thing! I told her not to tell you I told her.”
Mrs. Brown: “Well, don’t tell her that I told you she told me.”
We’ve all done this, haven’t we, probably more so when we were young. By now we’ve learned the hard way the damage that gossip does, and we don’t like to be on the receiving end of it.

2 Cor. 12:20 - “For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.”

Snared by words:
Matt. 12:36-37 – our own words snare us.

Prov. 6:2 – Ensnared by vows & promises spoken but not kept.

Justified or Condemned?:
Matt. 12:34-37 – by your words you will be justified and condemned.

1 Corinthians 6:11 - And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Galatians 2:16-17 - know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. 17 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! Galatians 3:11 - Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

Galatians 3:24 - So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.

Galatians 5:4 - You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Guard your lips and you will guard your life:
Ps. 141:3  - "Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips." I kept that verse posted on my refrigerator for years.

Prov 13:3 - "He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin." This is one that keeps me from speaking so impulsively:

Who, what, when, why, where and how we should speak, as Christians:
To whom: Ezek 33:8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. Ezek 33:9 But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.

What - Mark 16:15 - He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

When - Ephesians 5:16 - making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Why - Titus 2:7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Colossians 4:5 - Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

How - Col 4:6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

INSTRUMENTS IN THE WORSHIP SERVICE - PROS & CONS

INSTRUMENTS IN THE WORSHIP SERVICE PROS AND CONS

The following scriptures should help you decide for yourself if God approves of instruments being used to worship Him.

Numbers 4:12 - “They are to take all the articles used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with the durable leather and put them on a carrying frame.

Psalm 150:4 - ...praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,

Genesis 4:21 - His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.

I Chronicles 15:16 - David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.

1 Chronicles 16:42 - Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song.

1 Chronicles 23:5 - Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose.”

2 Chronicles 5:13 - The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.”

2 Chronicles 7:6 - The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the Lord’s musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the Lord and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, “His love endures forever.” Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.

2 Chronicles 29:27 - Hezekiah gave the order to sacrifice the burnt offering on the altar. As the offering began, singing to the Lord began also, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments of David king of Israel.

2 Chronicles 30:21  - The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great rejoicing, while the Levites and priests praised the Lord every day with resounding instruments dedicated to the Lord.

2 Chronicles 34:12 - The workers labored faithfully. Over them to direct them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites descended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, descended from Kohath. The Levites—all who were skilled in playing musical instruments—

Isaiah 38:20 - The Lord will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the temple of the Lord.

If a person uses their musical talent to gain glory or promote themselves in any way, God would frown on that. If a person uses their musical talent to mock God in any way, that too would be unacceptable. It's what's in the heart that counts. All talents of any kind should be used to glorify God.

Amos 6:5 - You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.

STUDY THE BIBLE AND PREACH IT

STUDY THE BIBLE AND PREACH IT

TEACH
Matt. 28:19-20 - Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

I Peter 3:15 - ...Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

TEACH & PREACH
I Tim. 4:13 - Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.

Deuteronomy 4:9 - Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Deuteronomy 4:10 - “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.”

Deuteronomy 11:18 - Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates,

Joel 1:3 - Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?
Tell it to your children and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.

Deuteronomy 6: 4-9 - The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

STUDY
II Tim. 2:15 (KJV) - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. I will add to this to digest the Word as you read it and be ready to exhale it as needed. And know that what you know is truth.

PREACH
II Tim. 4:2 - Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

Titus 1:1-3 - ...knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

HOW TO TREAT ME IF I GET DEMENTIA OR ALZHEIMER'S

HOW TO TREAT ME IF I GET DEMENTIA OR ALZHEIMER'S

Alzheimer's runs thick on Mom's side of the family so we six siblings worry that we will get it too. Now our kids are starting to worry. Just in case I do get it, I would like to make my loved ones aware of my wishes as to how I am treated.
  • I'm not crazy about going to a nursing home because of the odor and the bad food. On the other hand I don't want to be a burden to my kids and their kids and their kids. I trust my kids to make the right decision in view of the circumstances they are having to deal with.
  • Please don't talk to me like I'm two years old. It wouldn't please me.
  • Please don't take me out to eat. I would embarrass myself and others at the table and even around the table. I remember my grandma eating the tulips decorating the table. I would prefer to have food carried into my place where I am comfortable and wouldn't have to "dress up." The food isn't what's important. It's the company.
  • If you can carry a tune, sing to me. If you can't carry a tune, read the Bible to me. You can even read some of my poems to me and see if I recognize them.
  • Expect me to pick up things that aren't mine and put them in my pocket. Mom picked up some batteries at Walmart and put them in her pocket. She didn't do it because she's a thief. She did it because she no longer knew better.
  • I shouldn't be cooking, even with a toaster oven, air fryer or microwave.
  • I should no longer have the keys to the car once you realize I no longer always know where I'm going or how to get there. Mom was able to get ahold of her car keys with their rubber Donald Duck keyring attached. She made it home but it could have turned out badly.
  • Mom was in the back yard with Dad while he picked grapes one time and she wandered off while he had his back turned. He panicked when he turned around and saw she was gone. I was called to help look for her. I first drove to the house in which we first lived when we moved to Mt. Vernon, which was in the next block. She was "talking" to a little old lady out front. The lady knew enough to keep her occupied until she was found. It can happen so fast and our first response was to panic. But keep your wits about you and think about what is familiar to me if I should wander off or drive off.
  • Make copies of family pictures and let me go through them to pass the time and to help my brain.
  • If I don't want to eat my mashed potatoes, mix some peas in with them. I like them that way. Improvise when it comes to eating. Be creative like a mother has to when her kids are very young. No airplanes or childish games, though. I cut my kids' lunch meat and cheese slices into shapes with a Tupperware item when they wouldn't otherwise eat them. That would be acceptable. It is more creative and less babyish.
  • Since I am living out my last days/months/years, don't be too strict about how much I eat or what I eat or how much sleep I get. My quality of life is more important. Choose our battles.
  • Please don't take it personally if I say hurtful things because it won't be intentional or even true. I watched family members and friends get permanently scarred because of things said to them by a parent with Alzheimer's.
  • If I cuss, just know it isn't going to feel or sound familiar to me so hopefully I won't be quick to do that. I would be mortified if I knew what I was doing.
  • If I am in a really bad way, don't let the young ones see me that way or even the ones who cannot handle it. There is always both responses within a family dealing with a loved one with Alzheimer's.
  • Limit the amount of stress you endure because prolonged stress will affect your health. Those ailments that have been lying dormant within your system will rear their ugly heads. I don't want that for anyone in my family. What I have to endure in my last days is part of the dying process and won't last long compared to eternity. My offspring will have many days yet to live and I don't want them living it in pain or suffering.
  • If I am moving slowly, don't try to hurry me along by slowly pushing me. Get in front of me and reach out your hand.
  • If I end up with Alzheimer’s and then get a life threatening disease, do not treat the disease; let me go. Let nature take its course. Do anything to make my life with Alzheimer’s as short as possible within the law. The same is true if I get dementia.

WHAT DOES THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH BELIEVE?

WHAT DOES THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH BELIEVE?

The First Christian Church wasn't named to indicate we are the first, the best or the only Christians. We simply follow the practices of the first Christians, which included the Apostles whom Jesus himself taught. A new day had dawned when Jesus rose from the tomb. The old became new, but the Old Testament was and is still used as a guide, a teacher, a definer of sin.

Why We Meet on Sunday:

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, (Hebrews 10:24b-25a).

On the first day of the week we came together to break bread (Acts 20:7a).

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. John 20:1

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” John 20:19

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

Why we have communion every Sunday instead of Saturday:
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Acts 20:7
What we believe is the symbolism and purpose of Communion:

Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? (1 Corinthians 10:16)

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me” (I Corinthians 11:25).

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
What we believe about baptism:

What is baptism? Baptism is preceded by a public confession of true faith, belief and repentance followed by immersion in water for the forgiveness of sins and a receiving of the gift of the Holy Spirit, which was offered by the Lord Jesus Christ as stated in Acts 2:38.

Baptism is a New Testament commandment. It is symbolic burial in recognition of Jesus death, burial and resurrection. Through baptism sins are washed away and the new creature in Christ receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. Scripture compares baptism to Noah's ark: "In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him" (I Pet. 3:21-22).

God cleansed the earth of sin by burying in water the people who were blatantly sinning, but they didn't rise again from their watery grave. Noah and his three sons and their wives were the only ones saved. We who are baptized for the forgiveness of our sins will rise again to a new life. "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life" (Romans 6:4). The choice is ours: rise or remain dead in your sins.

Baptism should be acted on immediately after coming to the full knowledge of your sinfulness. You should desire to make your conversion known to others. The need to act quickly is shown in all of the conversions in the book of Acts: Paul, the jailer and his family, the eunuch to which Philip preached and who was baptized in a "body of water," the 3,000 that were baptized after hearing Peter preach on the Day of Pentecost, etc. Procrastination just gives the devil time to talk a person out of being baptized or to put hurdles in the way. The sooner a person receives the gift of the Holy Spirit, the better.

Baptism is necessary for Jesus to fulfill all righteousness. Matthew 3:13-16a says, "Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented." We are to follow Jesus's example. Also note that Jesus was likely immersed because the next verse says, "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water." John could have chosen a building in which to sprinkle or pour if he believed that's what Jesus wanted.

Baptism is an act of obedience. Obedience is stressed throughout the Bible but the obedience should be because we want to please Christ and not because we feel like we have to. After Jesus had died, risen, and ascended into heaven, Peter preached a sermon which grieved the hearts of the listeners. When he was finished, the people asked what they must do to be saved. Peter's response was, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). This requirement comes with a prized gift from the Lord Himself, that gift being the third part of Him, the Holy Spirit, who helps us throughout life as long as we don't permanently push Him away. He cannot co-exist with ongoing sin.

Baptism requires humility, a giving up of the pride that prevents a person from going forward to confess and repent in front of others. Vanity must be overcome in order for a person to be willing to get his or her hair wet in front of people. Those who are uncomfortable with being the center of attention must overcome that fear or any other fear long enough to fulfill this act of obedience.

Baptism is understanding that we are unworthy of the price Christ had to pay for our salvation, for His forgiveness of our sins, for the riches we will acquire in heaven and a realization that He loves us that much. "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God... (Romans 3:23). It is a way of acknowledging that "I get it now, Lord! Here I am; use me."

Baptism becomes void or meaningless if not followed by true love for Christ shown through our actions and obedience, notwithstanding the fact that we are still going to sin on occasion.

If our attention to the Lord ends with our baptism or if we are baptized with the wrong attitude or for the wrong reason, we would still be lost sinners -- just wet ones. Baptism done just for show, such as to win the heart of a Christian girlfriend or boyfriend, is not true baptism. Getting baptized just because friends are or just to get to participate in taking Communion are wrong motives.

A transformation is to occur when baptized. That transformation involves a complete turnaround from our sinful and selfish ways of the past and a striving to become perfect as Jesus was perfect, though that goal will never be altogether accomplished. Jesus was the only one who was, is and ever will be perfect. Though that is the goal, the transformation will not happen overnight. It takes time, discipline, obedience, a change in attitude and thinking, love for the Lord and others, and much prayer. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2) Since all have sinned, it was necessary that Jesus die to cleanse us of our sins. Ongoing sinners could not enter heaven but Jesus made a way when there seemed to be no way. He took our sins to the cross, buried them in his grave and rose again. We symbolically do the same through baptism. Therefore, one need not dispair when that person is caught in Satan's throes.

After baptism we are to follow Christ's teaching and example in our behavior and speech. "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" (I John 3:18). "But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips" (Col. 3:8). We are to walk by the spirit. "The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Gal. 5:22-23 NIV) The King James Version of the Bible translates forbearance as patience. The word "patience" rolls off the tongue easier than forbearance when trying to memorize that verse.

When baptized, you are adopted into the family of God. As a family member you will have the benefits of a family member and will be loved, cared for and offered an inheritance, an eternal home in heaven. Our Father in heaven is like the father in the Bible story of the prodigal son and will welcome us home even in our filth. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are eternal. He (the three-in-one) will never die. Neither will we if we confess our faith, repent, are baptized, obey Him and have a father-son/father-daughter relationship with Him from then on. A relationship with Christ compares to a relationship with your earthly father but on a much deeper level.

What Does It Take to be Saved?

...he one who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matt. 10:22),

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved...(Mark 16:16),

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved (John 10:9),

...everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21)...
There is another aspect to that verse. "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." It is important to study the Bible by subject, compiling all of the verses that have to do with a particular subject. Some verses can stand alone but it is important to do the research to "see the big picture" and to discover the details.

there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12)

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9)

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13)...

...hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord (I Corinthians 5:5). Note that the point isn't that Satan is allotted his punishment but the intent of punishment is that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (I Corinthians 15:2)

it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:5)

...women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. (I Timothy 2:15)

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good. (Titus 3:1) This verse doesn't mention being saved if we follow it but we are repeatedly told in scripture to be obedient.

he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5

And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” I Peter 4:18

Giving/Tithing:

Malachi 3:8-10 Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Matthew 6:4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Romans 12:8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

2 Corinthians 8:7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

Why we don't have an external council:

It is biblical to be governed by elders, but there are no scriptural references regarding having a council make decisions regarding the different churches in its district or division, including decisions regarding the transfer of ministers and whether or not to accept abortion and homosexuality. The elders mentioned in the following verses are not the same as the elders of the Jews. The Jews do not believe in Jesus as our Savior, of course.

Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. Acts 14:23
This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. Acts 15:2

Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. Acts 15:22
As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. Acts 16:4
From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. Acts 20:17

What are the steps to salvation:

Hear the Gospel. ( Romans 10:17, John 8:32)Believe the Gospel (Hebrews 11:6, John 20:31)
Repent of past sins (Luke 13:3, Acts 17:30)
Confess faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:10, Matthew 10:32)
Be Baptized (Galatians 3:27, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38)
Be faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10)

Lent:

The tradition of Lent is people giving up something that they love. It is not a bad tradition but it isn't scriptural.

Why we are called Christians:

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch (Acts 11:26b).

Why no priest?

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16

12 But when this priest (Jesus*) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Hebrews 10:12-14 Writer's note: Jesus made a one-time sacrifice for those who are being made holy. He was that sacrifice. No animals were sacrificed after that since animal blood couldn't provide a permanent cleansing of sins.

Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. Hebrews 7:27

It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:23-28

Our motto:

Speak where the Bible speaks and remain silent where the Bible is silent.

GIVING/TITHING

GIVING/TITHING

Malachi 3:8-10 Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Deuteronomy 14:22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.

I Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income...

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Matthew 6:3-4        so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 23:23-24 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

Philippians 4:15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;

WAR IN THE HEAVENS

WAR IN THE HEAVENS

Ephesians 6:12 - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

How can we war against the "spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms?" The battle is for our souls. My first thought is to send up prayers. Prayers are like ammunition to the "light" angels in attacking the "dark" angels, or the fallen angels. Our prayers weaken the power of the dark forces. Never underestimate the power of prayer or the loss of power without prayers. "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (KJV)

Job was tested by both God and Satan to see which one to whom he would remain faithful. I believe there are those who have been tested since the days of Job and there are those of us who are being tested today. We may suffer terrible loss and our friends and relatives may turn against us, but we must remain firm. Where we spend eternity and with whom we spend eternity may be at stake.

We can also do our part in building God's kingdom. Winning people to Christ is the most effective way to do that. Then we need to help those who respond build a relationship with Him. Educate them on the Bible, take them to church, show hospitality, and be an example. Before we can educate others, we need to be well acquainted with scripture ourselves. "Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (II Tim.2:15 KJV). "... Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," (I Peter 3:15). "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. (II Timothy 4:2). Every dedicated convert builds the kingdom.

Satan can make wrong seem right and right seem wrong. "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil," (Isaiah 5:20). "Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed" (I Cor. 13:7). We must be well grounded in God's Word. Satan can also make worldly things seem fun, exciting, and harmless. Don't be fooled. He is the father of lies. It is a paradox that when we are disciplined, we are the most free, but when we become “carefree,” we become a slave to our sins. To be free in Christ is to be free indeed!

Like in any war, there will be loss, but the final battle will be won. We must do our part, not because we have to but because we want to and because we want to spend eternity with Jesus in heaven, not Satan in hell. "Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it" (Psalm 34:14).

“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned." John 5:28-29

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good." Romans 12:9
