DAVID & GOLIATH: A GIANT PROBLEM

(I Samuel 17)

David was just a lad,

Whose older brothers had gone to war.

The Philistines with whom they battled,

Had a history of blood and gore.

The Philistines had an advantage;

In their army was a giant.

The 9-foot man was Goliath,

And he was loud and defiant.

He mocked the Israelites daily,

The soldiers were naturally scared.

So when he asked for someone to fight,

Not a single person dared.

David had brought his brothers food;

His dad knew they must refuel.

When David heard Goliath’s taunts,

He announced he was ready to duel.

Goliath begged someone to fight him,

And the winner the loser would serve.

David became indignant;

He thought Goliath had his nerve.

He knew the Lord would not approve,

Of Israel being disgraced.

How dare he defy the armies of God,

The giant had to be faced.

His brothers had no patience with David;

They told him to go away.

But his words got around to the king,

Who would hear what he had to say.

When Saul deemed him too young,

David told of feats rare to men.

He had killed a lion and a bear;

He knew God would save him again.

David put on heavy armor,

But it didn’t fit him right.

So he had no sword or protection,

Yet was still willing to fight.

When Goliath approached his opponent,

He saw he was young and handsome.

He despised him even more,

But David would win the king’s ransom.

David carried with him a slingshot.

With a rock in the sling, he pulled it.

The rock hit Goliath in the head;

It sunk in like a bullet.

All nine feet came crashing down,

And David cut off his head.

There was no doubt in anyone’s mind,

That the Philistine giant was dead.

David returned to tend his sheep,

For he was a shepherd boy.

But he was destined to be the king,

So there’s a whole lot more to the story.
