3-PART STORY OF JOSEPH
3-PART STORY OF JOSEPH
CARRIED ABOUT WITH EVERY WIND OF DOCTRINE
That phrase from scripture comes to mind every time I hear someone say they have changed from one church to another, which I know has completely differing views on the main tenets or beliefs of the church. I understand they might go to a church that makes them feel more welcome, but the beliefs of the church should be non-negotiable if they have been tested by time and approved by scripture. Knowledge of the essentials, which are first and foremost Jesus's life, burial, resurrection and ascension, baptism, communion, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Those beliefs should not only be based on the teachings in the Bible but on the acts of the Apostles and other devout Christians of that day and age. For instance, they met on the first day of the week to break bread (communion) and fellowship. They taught baptism as being important. There was no delay in getting baptized, as shown by the jailer and his family, the Ethiopian traveling in a chariot, and Saul/Paul, the special Apostle. We are to repent and confess before being baptized. Babies cannot do either. Jesus and the Ethiopian went down into the water to be baptized and came up out of the water. Baptism was compared to the great flood when the sins of the people were buried in water, not by a sprinkling of rain. There is always room for discussion on each of those beliefs but the minds of the church people should be of one accord. Otherwise there is controversy, discord, and possibly division. I've seen it happen and heard about it many times. Church hopping without any concern for the truths in the Bible should not be happening.
Ephesians 4:11-16 KJV - "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" There's plenty of winds of doctrine, cunning men, and deceivers out there these days and they have many venues in which to use their craftiness. Are we prepared? Are we united in faith and knowledge?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV - "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." This verse pretty much says it all. It is self-explanatory.
2 Peter 1:20 KJV - "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation." Many claim to know much about the Bible, but if they talk long enough, it is easy to see they don't know as much as they think they do. Deep study of the Bible is the only way to accurately interpret the Bible. Interpretation should follow the Bible, the practices of the first Christians and Apostles, and what other devout Christians believe. We are to be unified in our beliefs, or of one accord, to use the phrase the Bible uses so often. Believing a subject because your grandmother did or does isn't being true to the Bible. Believing it because a charismatic tv preacher says so doesn't make it true. I believe in studying a subject as a whole, by researching every verse that has to do with that subject. It is wrong to pull a verse out of context.
II Timothy 2:15 NIV - "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." In four words: know your Bible well.
II Timothy 2:15 KJV - (my personal favorite version) "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
2 Corinthians 4:2 NIV "Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God." Plain truth is a whole lot better than a health and wealth sermon or a theatrical performance from the pulpit.
Hebrews 5:12 NIV - "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!" If you are still at a pre-school or elementary level of Bible teaching, if that, you definitely need to get into the meat of the Word, or in-depth study. We are living in a messed-up world today caught in the battle between good and evil and there's a whole lot of evil going on everywhere.
Hebrews 5:13 NIV - "Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness." It is shocking to me how little people know about the Bible, even those who profess to be Christians. They drift from church to church because they haven't built their faith on solid ground. They are carried by the winds of doctrine. The devil knows scripture well. If he were to tempt a person who doesn't know the Bible well, he would have a good chance of convincing them of his lies because he is persuasive and is the father of lies.
Matthew 15:9 KJV - "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." In other words, people go through the motions of worshiping God but teach world views instead of doctrine.
Colossians 4:6 NIV "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." Naturally, you don't want to come on too strong or offend anyone but you want to show confidence in what you believe and you need to know well what you believe and why.
Matthew 5:19 - "Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Make sure you're teaching Christ's commands accurately from the least to the greatest. If you teach the least command wrong, you will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. Note that if one is called the least, there must be levels of acceptance into the kingdom. No wonder the road is narrow that leads to heaven.
Ephesians 4:5 - "... one Lord, one faith, one baptism;" It is important to know which baptism is the one to teach and why it is the one true baptism Jesus requires of all Christians. Babies cannot repent or confess. They have not yet sinned though they were born into a sinful world. Sprinkling does not symbolize being buried with Christ in baptism or the sins of the world being washed away like with their burial by water in the days of Noah when all of the people drowned except Noah and his family. The Bible states that Jesus went down into the water and came up out of it and so did the Ethiopian. The Ethiopian probably had a water bottle or jug in his chariot but didn't use it.
SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL, DO NO EVIL, THINK NO EVIL
SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL,DO NO EVIL, THINK NO EVIL
SEE NO EVIL
Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
Isaiah 33:15 Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—
Psalm 101:3 I will not look with approval on anything that is vile.
Matthew 5:28-29 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Job 31:1 “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman."
Proverbs 6:24-25 ... keeping you from your neighbor’s wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman. 25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
I John 2:15-16 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
HEAR NO EVIL
Isaiah 33:15-17 Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them. 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.
Proverbs 7:21 With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk.
Proverbs 17:4 A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.
II Timothy 4:3-5 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship ...
Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
James 1:19 Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry ...
James 1:22-25 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do
I Timothy 4:1-2 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
Jeremiah 14:14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.
SPEAK NO EVIL
Isaiah 33:15-17 Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them. 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.
Proverbs 17:4 ... a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.
Prov. 17:5 Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 6:1-2 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, 2 you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.
Romans 1:26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
Romans 16:17-18 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
Ephesians 4:29-32 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
II Timothy 2:16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly ... who have departed from the truth.
II Timothy 2:23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.
Romans 1:28-32 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
James 1:26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

DO NO EVIL

I Thessalonians 5:12-22 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
I Peter 3:13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
THINK NO EVIL

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR PRAYERS
First and foremost, you have to pray. James 4:2 - "You do not have because you do not ask God."
Use every means to alert people you need prayer. Be specific in your reason for needing prayer. Ask for prayer on facebook, ask your church family to pray, ask people you meet to pray. Go to church sites on facebook or anywhere else on the internet and ask for prayer.
Have the elders of the church anoint the sick or injured person with oil and pray over him or her. It's a lost practice but it's straight out of the Bible. James 5:14 - "Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."
If you make a vow, don't break it. Ecclesiastes 5:5 - "It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it."
Fast. Don't eat at all but drink water. Or eat little and drink water. Don't put your own health at risk, though. Those with autoimmune diseases or who are otherwise unhealthy, such as with a heart condition, probably shouldn't fast.
Pray for those who are fearing for the sick or injured one. Pray no one has a car accident getting to the sick or injured person. They are going to be upset and may be tired and/or crying, which may increase the odds of them having an accident.
Posted on facebook by my sister, Jamie Pearson:
I found this in a 1917 soldier's prayer book and thought I would share:
"The strongest weapon of the brave man is prayer. For by it he is united to God, the source and author of all strength...The essence of prayer is not length. But when you pray close your mind and heart to all else save God. Pray attentively; pray with sincerity; pray with strong faith; pray with unfailing hope; pray with real love. Pray daily; pray perseveringly; pray each day as though it were your last opportunity to pray."

SUICIDE
SUICIDE
Suicide is not a natural instinct and defies reason. Most of us have a survival instinct. There are those who live in fear everyday of bombs, possible torture, potential rape, etc. There are those who have cut off a limb just to survive a situation in which they are pinned by something in the middle of nowhere. And then there are those who are faced with stressful situations and have no desire to live. Sometimes it is a relationship problem. A death wish is common among those living in distress, and that still falls in the normal category, but suicide does not.
Logic says that many situations change whether or not we want them to change. Granted, some take us by surprise. A person who wants to kill themselves rather than trying to work through a situation or situations is not thinking logically. They forget about the things they enjoy. They forget about the people who love them and how badly their loved ones will be affected. They forget that their favorite season is just around the corner. They don’t take into account that new members will be added to the family either through birth or marriage.
Drugs play a role in many suicides. They cloud a person’s thinking process. Drugs give misguided advice. When the drugs take over, the suicidal one is no longer in control. They begin to hate themselves and don’t see a way out. They want to be free again but find it is too painful and stressful. Or they may think they are perfectly normal and anything people say that suggests they are not normal will cause them to be defiant and those people will be alienated. They may also alienate loved ones because they are ashamed of themselves. Depression often goes along with drugs. The drugs may cause depression and the depression may cause people to turn to drugs. It’s a vicious cycle.
It isn’t unusual to hear about celebrities who try to commit or do commit suicide. They may have everything a person could want going for them: money, fame, luxurious homes, fancy cars, good looks, talent, etc. and yet they cannot live with themselves. Again, that’s unnatural and is void of logic.
Mental illness may play a role in the suicide epidemic. It’s as if the survival instinct is backfiring. The synapses that are firing in the brain are in reverse in a part of the reasoning area. Could it be that the brain cells in that area have been damaged or were never there? Could it be that drugs or food additives have killed the cells in that area.
It is important that we pay attention when someone even mentions taking their own lives. Don’t let the subject pass. Ask questions. See if they already have a plan in mind. “If you did it, how would you do it?” Find out if they have the means (gun, knife, razor blade). Ask if they would do it at home or go to a favorite area. Ask them how much rest they have been getting lately and if they have been eating. Are they giving their belongings away? Have they been depressed? Hug them and tell them you care about them and hope they are just joking. But follow up checking on them and by all means tell their parents or ones close to them even if they think you’re nuts. If they are on the verge of committing suicide in your presence, stop them if you can and take them to a hospital for evaluation.

THE FIRST FEMALE POLICE CHIEF IN FRANKLIN COUNTY IL
My maiden name is Overturf. My dad was from Buckner. I don't know if this ancestor was directly kin to us but the article is interesting. The internet is unwilling to recognize her as the first police chief of Buckner or Franklin County and this is the only record available except for possibly her descendants who are now spread around the country. So I'm getting this information out there so they will give this female the credit due her.
